Tord Sterner

Co-Founder and Senior Nuclear Expert, projects

Professional:
After Master of Science, Chalmers E-67 and in the nuclear power industry: After graduating from Chalmers, the first job was at Boeing in Seattle with the development and production of the first jumbo jet, the Boeing 747. Interesting because, among other things, it has control systems that are redundant and physically separated - just like we design the nuclear power plants.
At Asea Atom and later ABB Atom, I was, among other things, commissioning manager for the turnkey plant Olkiluoto 1 and later also responsible for a turnkey tender to Industrins Kraft i Finland (for Olkiluoto3), a project that could not be carried out for political reasons.
I have also been involved in the power upgrade of both Oskarshamn 3 and Forsmark 3. I was responsible for the ABB delivery of the first HVDC plant to India, a turn-key project the first of its kind in India.
This project included substantial training of Customer´s engineering staff.
I was also responsible for the delivery of a comprehensive Supervisory and Control System (SCADA) to Abu Dhabi including two Control Centers.

I participated as a teacher at KTH in the Master's course "Leadership for safety".

I was the Project Director and Consortium Leader for an international consortium with partners from Sweden, Switzerland, Italy and Finland

Private: Tord has previously been a pilot for small private planes and also sailer on Lake Mälaren. Together with children and grandchildren he visited different parts of the USA, including Alaska.

Juhani Hyvärinen, D.Sc (Tech)

Co-Founder and Senior Nuclear Expert, safety

Professional:
Power Plant Engineer by original training, specialising in nuclear. Graduated in 1988 from Lappeenranta University of Technology. Joined the Finnish nuclear regulatory authority STUK, worked safety analyses of VVERs and BWRs. Gained international recognition with his discovery of the inherent boron dilution risk in PWRs and contributions to the resolution ECCS sump/strainer clogging problems. These works led to his D.Sc.(Eng.) thesis On the Fundamentals of Nuclear Safety: Inherent Threats and their Implications, which he successfully defended in 1996.

Became the lead safety assessor of TVO’s candidates for the 5th reactor in Finland in late 90’s and early 2000’s. After the World Trade Center attacks in 2001, initiated the Finnish experimental research program on aircraft crash impact phenomena. In 2007, was one of the first key experts to join Fennovoima, a nuclear new build company, where acted as the Chief Nuclear Officer. Fennovoima proceeded to win political approval both on local and national level, leading to the prospect of building new nuclear on a greenfield site for the first time in Europe in decades. Left Fennovoima in 2014 to pursue an academic career, since at that time all big decisions – company ownership, site and plant technology – had been made. Works as Professor of Nuclear Engineering at his alma mater, LUT University, focusing his research on overall safety (safety, security, safeguards) and advancing understanding of nuclear thermal hydraulics, especially of passive safety systems and features, in reactors large and small.

Private: Happy father-of-two and one grandchild. Divides his time between Lappeenranta and Helsinki, where his family lives.
