NNE strengthens its Nordic presence with a Country Manager for Norway
Nordic Nuclear Energy (NNE) has appointed Dr Martin Hjelmeland as Country Manager for Norway, as the company builds the foundation for BWR-N as a Nordic solution.

In June 2026, Nordic Nuclear Group, which includes Nordic Nuclear Energy, Nordic Baseload Power and Nordic Nuclear Holding, secured SEK 35 million in a financing round. The investment marked the start of a new growth phase, moving the group from development towards industrialisation and commercialisation of the Swedish boiling water reactor (BWR) technology.
Martin Hjelmeland has a background as an engineer and entrepreneur in the nuclear energy sector, and he also serves as the Deputy Chair of the Norwegian Nuclear Association. He will lead NNE’s work in Norway, including dialogue with industry, investors and authorities.
NNE’s near-term priority for new plants is Sweden and Finland, where the regulatory frameworks for new nuclear power are most developed. In June, NNE’s sister company Nordic Baseload Power submitted a permit application and a financing application to the Swedish Government for two BWR-N reactors at Barsebäck.
Norwegian industry, with a strong track record in oil and gas and a vibrant shipyard industry, has the potential to play an important role in NNE’s effort to deploy BWR-N.
Norway is also part of the long-term picture for BWR-N deployment. Eastern Norway has been identified as a promising region for future nuclear power, and NNE wants to be ready as the Norwegian debate and regulatory work progresses.
A Nordic solution
BWR-N is an evolved version of the Swedish and Finnish boiling water reactor, designed for large-scale, fossil-free electricity production in Nordic conditions. NNE sees the Nordic region as a natural common market for development, investment and expertise, where the Norwegian and Danish industry can leverage their industrial capabilities.
“The Nordic region needs more stable, fossil-free power, and the Nordic countries have a lot to gain from working together on nuclear energy. BWR-N builds on proven Nordic technology and experience, and I look forward to building NNE’s presence in Norway and to bring the industrial capabilities of the oil and gas industry into our deployment plans for BWR-N,” says Martin Hjelmeland, Country Manager Norway at Nordic Nuclear Energy.
